How to Prep the Littles for your Next Family Photoshoot

A family photoshoot… it’s always wonderful to capture those beautiful family moments in photographs that become family heirlooms. But the process can be overwhelming. It always seems like your kids always misbehave the ONE TIME you want them to smile. Being a parent is hard enough! You just want ONE PHOTO of everyone together. Is that too hard to ask? No, it’s not! And it doesn’t have to be stressful! Here are three tips I have for you when you’re prepping your little ones before and during your photoshoot!

Tips on how to prepare your kids for a family photoshoot.

Tip One

Before the photoshoot prepare your little ones by explaining to them what you’re about to do! No matter what age. “We are going to meet a new friend who is so kind! She also has a really nice camera! You know how Mommy takes photos of you with my phone? Well, she is going to take photos of all of us so we ALL can be in the photo! (Moms we NEED to be in photos too!) “If you listen well and smile we can go and get a special treat after!” That may seem easier said than done, but prepping them and letting them know beforehand will help me as the photographer big time! Make a family night out of it! Go out to ice cream, dinner, or pizza after! Make memories together!

Tip Two

At the shoot, LET THE KIDS BE KIDS. It’s always a good idea to bring tick-tacks, mints, Goldfish crackers or a small treat to reward them when they listen well. But don’t let your kids stress YOU out at the shoot so you can’t even enjoy it. Enjoy letting them run around, be silly, and if they don’t listen, it’s because they are kids! Let them take a break, let them get to know me the photographer so we can build trust! The best way to get the most authentic shot of them is to just let kids be kids. If they want to pretend they are a farmer because they are in the middle of the field, let them! If they want to pick the grass or flowers, join in on the fun! What will make the shoot harder is if mom or dad is stressed because they think the kids aren’t listening. Be yourself, and enjoy the chaos! After all, life with kids can be chaotic at times!

Tip Three

Come with a full belly! No one likes to be hangry! Taking professional photos with kids takes a lot energy. So make sure ALL bellies come full (even parents!) so YOU and the kids are ready to take some beautiful photos together! Everyone has a better time together when you’re full. That even means for the new little babies nursing, too! I will ALWAYS ask if you need to take a nursing break or a water break for the toddlers. Looking good for the camera can be hard and we all can use a break!

Overall, remember to relax and enjoy yourself during your family photoshoot! Trust your professional photographer - I promise I know what I am doing! I love working with kids and have for over 15 years! Every child is different and needs different things. If we all enjoy the beauty of being a child and a growing family during your shoot you will come home with beautiful photographs for the next generation to enjoy for years to come.

Cheers!
