Everyone Needs to Experience a New England Fall

Growing up, I would go to New England in the summertime to visit family. I have great memories of going to Boston. We would go on Duck Tours, see Plymouth Rock, walk around downtown Boston, visit with my Nanna, explore her forest backyard where my Dad and Uncles grew up, hear stories on how they would play with the neighborhood kids. We went to Nahant and jumped off the wharf. So many fun memories!

I’ve truly enjoyed New England as a child. Now, living on the east coast we try to make our way up to visit family when we can. We were lucky enough to have an away rotation for Greg’s work in 2019. We were in Maine from June until November! Summer and fall is the BEST time of year in Maine!

Greg and I fell in love with Maine! We still talk about it ALL THE TIME. We had a little getaway this past October and we thought maybe we should go somewhere we had never been before. But when it came down to it, we LOVE Maine in the fall.

Everyone needs to experience a New England fall. We get fall in Maryland, but it’s NOTHING like a New England fall. Crisp cool air, beautiful colors everywhere, and the people in Portland, Maine are actually nice! (Such a breath of fresh air coming from D.C.) We love the small town feeling but it’s still a city!

We stayed at the cutest Bed and Breakfast just about 30 minutes outside of Portland. The Wolf Cove Inn sits on a lake, with beautiful colors and views to enjoy! Bonfires, coffee, tea, and yummy breakfast every morning!

Greg and I also got to enjoy the beautiful views at Vista of Maine Vineyard and Cidery. The cider was yummy, the pumpkins and apples were festive, and we got to enjoy some pumpkin doughnuts! It felt like a classic fall day! There were many cider flavors to taste from. But if we had to choose, we loved the classic cider! We had a wonderful walk in the apple orchard as well. It was so nice to be together and have wonderful conversation.

We spent a lot of time in Portland. If you haven’t been to Portland, I highly recommend it. The food is amazing, the bakeries are yummy, and it’s right off the ocean. We love Portland. I’m not a huge city person. I’m from a small town and I love the small town feel. Portland feels like San Luis Obispo, CA but a little bit bigger, with more history, and with WAY better lobster rolls. (Full warning: the coffee is not so good - but I’m very picky about my coffee.) The lighthouses are beautiful. I could sit on a bench all day and look out at them.

If you have always wanted to go to New England, I highly recommend going in the fall. It’s such a beautiful part of our country and it’s something that a lot of west coast natives miss out on. I get it, I’m from the central coast of California and there isn’t a huge reason to go out and explore because it’s so wonderful there. But I promise you there is so much more beauty out there in the world! Pack your bag and go explore! You’ll learn so much about the world and yourself. And for those who live and grew up in New England, don’t forget how beautiful it truly is! What a gift to look forward to such beauty every fall. Greg and I had a wonderful time in Maine, and I hope you get to make it there one day, too!

xoxo
